St. Thomas’ Pre-School Playgroup
Behaviour Management Policy.
The aim of this statement is to provide a clear guide to the Pre-school’s policy for all parents and carers as well as the staff and helpers.
*Positive behaviour will always be praised.
*All adults in the pre-school will ensure that the rules are applied consistently, so that children have the security of knowing what to expect and can build up useful habits of behaviour.
*All adults will try to provide a positive model for the children with regard to friendliness, care and courtesy.
*Adults in the pre-school will praise and endorse desirable behaviour such as kindness and willingness to share.
*We will take positive steps to avoid a situation in which children receive adult attention only in return for undesirable behaviour.
WHEN CHILDREN BEHAVE IN AN UNACCEPTABLE WAYS:
*Where the behaviour of a child merits intervention from staff or helpers, the child or children will be spoken to, and their behaviour discussed. It will be made clear that it is the child’s behaviour, not him/herself, that is unacceptable.
*Smacking, slapping, shaking or any other form of physical chastisement will not be used on any child in pre-school in any circumstances, nor be subjected to ridicule, sarcasm or shouting. (A raised voice may be used in very rare occasions as a ‘danger’ warning from staff or helpers)
*Children will not be excluded from the group, although appropriate behaviour may be achieved with time out with an adult.
*In the case of extreme or recurrent behaviour that has not been dealt with successfully by using the guidance above, the pre-school leader will seek to discuss the behaviour with the child(ren)’s parent/carers. In partnership with the parent/carers a way of dealing with, or minimising the effects of the behaviour, will be agreed and written in the form of an action plan. Parents/carers will be given a copy of this plan. Wherever possible this will seek to continue methods used in the child’s home. Regardless of disciplinary methods used in the child(ren)’s home, no form of physical chastisement will be used. In extreme cases, St. Thomas’ Pre-school Playgroup reserves the right to ask for the removal or exclusion of the child(ren).
*Adults will be aware that some kinds of behaviour may arise from a child’s special needs.
*This policy will be discussed with each staff member, helper, volunteer or anyone engaged in childcare at the Pre-school and strict adherence to it will be insisted upon. *Any member of staff who does not abide by this policy will face dismissal. In addition all parents will be informed of this written Behaviour Management policy.
